3 nights half board in a refurbished 17th Century Monastery, now a beautiful 4* Hotel, centrally located in the Spanish port of Puerto de Santa Maria
Day 1 – Coach to Puerto de Santa Maria with stops on the way.
Day 2 - El Puerto de Santa María and Cádiz on the ferry
A guided walk of Puerto de Santa María.
This beautiful town lies at the mouth of the river Guadalete and gave its name to Columbus' ship, the Santa María, which he chartered here over 500 years ago to make his world-changing voyages of discovery. The 100 palaces date back to colonial times and are witnesses of a splendid past. Nowadays, the town has two main sources of income: fishing and sherry. Both fresh and cooked fish are everywhere in this port – on the street, in bars and in restaurants and it tastes even better washed down with a cold, dry sherry. After a stop for a bite, we will be taking a trip round the bay on the ferry.
A guided walk of Cádiz
Cádiz has an enormous historical heritage: it was the first real city in the Western world, settled in 1110 BC by the Phoenician, Hercules; but its golden age came in the 18th century when Cádiz monopolized trade with the New World. The first Spanish Constitution was written here in 1812 at a time when Napoleon's troops dominated the rest of the country. We shall be doing a guided tour of the city centre on foot, taking in its many interesting and varied sights. After this, the coach will pick us up and drive us around the perimeter of this ancient Andalusian capital before heading back to our hotel.
Day 3 - Jerez: Sherry, Horses And Clocks
A full-day excursion to Jerez, capital of the sherry district.
First we shall be visiting the very interesting Clock Museum which contains many beautiful timepieces from historical periods, many of them being fine British masterpieces. As the vast majority of these works of art are still in working order, they all strike on the hour giving the museum a beautiful sound. After this we shall attend an equestrian exhibition by some of Spain's most talented riders who will be performing with horses trained to dance to classical and Spanish music. Other highlights of the show are the beautiful 18th century clothes worn by the riders and also the decorations on the horses themselves. After some free time for lunch in the centre of town, we shall be visiting one of the world famous sherry producers. We'll be able to learn the difference between traditional white wine and sherry, and we shall, of course be tasting the product.
Day 4 - Coach Home with stops on the way.
