In memory of Sarah Makin
On Friday April 28 2023 we said farewell to Sarah Makin. This is what our President said at her funeral:
“Sarah was a leading light in the Almanzora Group of Friends and was a great support to me professionally, but more importantly, personally.
In 2012 she started working in the library on a Friday and her bubbly personality livened up our day.
She then began helping Juliet Ryall with our monthly magazine, taking it over completely in 2015 when Juliet had to give up.”
Juliet says ‘She was such a joy to have known. Her giggle and smile and gentle delight in life were so infectious. She was a support to me during difficult times. Such a tender hearted lady.’
Indeed she was.
In April 2016 Sarah and I set up ‘Coffee Spanglish’ to give those learning to speak English or Spanish the opportunity to practice with each other in an informal setting. Sarah formed links with the Language School in Macael and one afternoon their students joined us and we had 50 attendees. That was great fun and very rewarding. As usual, Sarah was in the middle of it all.
After we moved to Plaza San Antonio in 2018 we started going into the local primary schools to speak to the children in English to help build on the work of their teachers. Sarah, of course, put her heart and soul into this and her teaching background was invaluable. The children and teachers loved her.
Sarah was Special. And she made each and every one of us feel special.
She will be sorely missed but never, EVER, forgotten.”
