Message from the President: January 2024
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL. We hope 2024 will be a good one for you and yours.
This month we welcome Alan Boscott who is replacing Ian Hurley to work with Frank Moorhouse on travel, He has already organised two trips. One in January to Almeria to visit the new Ikea and the
Torrecardenas shopping centre. The other to the Sierra Nevada in February. This was full within days of its release and a waiting list has been produced to organise a second coach or a repeat trip.
Frank tested the waters on a trip to Portugal which also elicited a positive response and is likely to go ahead in September.
As always, if there is anywhere you would particularly like to go to or can recommend please let them know.
We also welcome María-Elena Heed who is taking over the role of Magazine Editor from Lisa Sargison. She will join the committee and will be nominated for election at the AGM later this month.
Thank you, Lisa, for your sterling work over the last 2 years or more and for offering to support María-Elena while she learns the ropes.
Another new committee member to be elected at the AGM is Peter Williams, who has offered to take over the Publicity role from Mike Witherspoon. Thanks also to Mike for his commitment to the group.
He will still be around and coming on our trips so we have not lost his input altogether.
A third person who has offered to join the committee is Val Boscott. We are delighted to nominate her for election in a general post for the moment. I am sure we will find her a specific role once she is on board.
This year we re-instated our visits to the primary schools to read to the children in English, building on the work of their teachers and giving them chance to hear the language spoken fluently.
However, most of our original team have moved on so we need help. If you have a few hours to spare once or twice a week and would like to spend those hours helping these children to learn, then please do contact us – by popping into the centre or emailing us.
Finally, at our AGM on Monday 29th January we need all our committee members to be voted in again and to ratify the appointment of Marie-Elena, Peter and Val. This is to be held at 11:30 in La Parilla, Albox, on the Plaza Mayor near the main church. To attend and vote at the AGM you need to be in current membership so please renew as soon as possible if you have not already. We are hoping to have a short quiz following the meeting, in time for lunch or tapas afterwards. Look forward to seeing you there.
