Our trip to the tunnels. July 2022: Write up
The bomb shelters in Almeria, built and used during the Spanish Civil War, are truly amazing – the way they were planned and constructed, being accessed even before completed – the sheer scale of
them under the city – and the contents. I will say no more about that or it will spoil the surprise if you haven’t visited before. Personally, I found the whole experience very enlightening and would
recommend a visit to anyone new to the area (and even long time residents like me).
When our (first) group set off the guide, Antonio J Sanchez, was a bit nervous about the level of his English but luckily we had some of our Coffee Spanglish participants on board. Philip and Susan Brand helped him along and Sue became our unofficial translator. She did really well. Thanks Sue (who said a silent prayer to Cristine Diaz Garcia who runs our Coffee Spanglish group.
As usual, we set off in high spirits and returned in even higher ones, after the tunnel visit and liquid refreshments. Many thanks to Ian Hurley, who personally organised the tickets for the two groups. Hasta la próxima.
We are preparing a full article on Almeria in the next few months and the history of the tunnels is part of this.
